My work essentially concerns a sense of place – of being in a particlar space, travelling through it, considering how the elements or man’s intervention have affected that place. I choose textiles and stitch to express these things as a means of working into and building up the surface of the image. I employ a variety of techniques including applique, paint and dye, felting, hand and machine stitching and fabric moulding and manipulation based on Japanese pattern cutting principles. I also produce textile pieces for churches, basically employing the procedures. A current commission is for Carlisle Cathedral and I have work in churches throughout the UK and Ireland.
