About

Cheshire Open Studios Artists @ Work in their Studios is an exciting and successful free annual event that has taken place annually in Cheshire since 1997.  During this time on average 50-80 artists and craftspeople open their studios each year, either as individuals or in-groups, over 3-4 weekends.

In 2017  Cheshire Open Studios will be celebrating 20 years of Artist Open Studios & Annual Open Exhibition!

Every year we are looking at ways to make this a very special event for our artists and visitors with interactive, fun and inspiring art events across Cheshire.

This year the event will run with artists opening their studios in September & October alongside our annual open exhibition from September to November.

From 2013 we commenced holding the exhibition as an Annual “OPEN” exhibition to enable ALL Cheshire-based professional artists, crafters & artisans to participate regardless of whether they had a studio space.

The initiative supports professional artists including visual & performance artists, craft makers and artisans who often work in isolation; enabling networking, mutual support and the opportunity for them to engage with the public.

The project originated due to the lack of contemporary local galleries within Cheshire by promoting artists in their own or public spaces and encouraging new opportunities for residencies, commissions, selling, exhibiting and teaching. Many of our artists work to support and share their skills in their local communities in schools and adult education, whilst others consist of emerging, award winning or artists that are internationally renowned for their contribution to the arts.

We welcome participation by experimental, community, emerging or conceptual artists and recent graduates receive a 25% discount off their membership fees.

There is no selection process for participants for the Open Studios Artist category however all participating artists must be professional or semi-professional artist living and working in Cheshire (including Cheshire West, East, Warrington, Halton & Runcorn) with an ongoing portfolio of work.

There is however a possibility of a selection process for “Exhibiting Only” artists for the OPEN exhibition. The exhibition venue or gallery may also have its own selection procedure.

The open studios event is a unique chance to meet local professional artists, to discover how and where they produce their work and provides the opportunity to informally engage with them and buy or commission from them directly at reasonable prices!

During the event the Cheshire county is divided into a number of areas giving visitors the opportunity to visit several local studios over a period of days or weekends.

An artist led project for artists

Cheshire Open Studios is a self-funding, not-for-profit, artist led project, run by a voluntary steering group of artists and project coordinator. Many of the artists that take part are also members of Cheshire Artists Network and other local art groups and organisations.

So we hope you will join the Cheshire Open Studio Artist Trail this year by following our Artist Studio signs that clearly mark each studio location!

Want to join us in the FUTURE!
